Restaurant Review: Tamarind, Mayfair

Tamarind Restaurant Review, Mayfair, London

Cuisine: Indian Fine-Dining
Style Points: 5/5
Price: £££
Overall: 5/5

This is a Michelin star restaurant with a host of awards including reaching the top ten in the ‘Best in Britain Award’ every year since its inauguration in 1995. That certainly does make a statement. The main dining area is located in the windowless basement of the building and the room relies on sparse atmospheric lighting to light up the white, brown and bronze walls. This creates a very intimate and calm atmosphere which suits an evening meal, although I can imagine the setting being a tiny bit oppressive for dining on a bright sunny day.

Would I Want Seconds?

The quality of the food made my qualms about the interior solely irrelevant. The food tastes exactly like what you would expect Michelin starred food to taste. Near perfect taste sensations are achieved through delivering divine flavours in every dish, all of which seem to hit the taste buds at exactly the right time. This might all sound like a bit of cliche but there is no other way to describe it. Creating food this good must be a science.

The flavours in the vegetarian dishes are just as good as the non-veg option. I haven’t tasted authentic Indian food this good in a while. And I do mean authentic; many restaurants make this claim but Tamarind delivers. The secret to this may be the authentic North Indian tandoor oven that they use to cook their dishes.

In addition, the menu is constantly updated by Executive Chef Alfred Prasad which keeps it innovative and fresh.

Could I Afford Seconds?

With the amount of deals Tamarind have, a resounding yes! There is the Pre/Post Theatre Menu which offers 3 courses, as well as naan, rice, daal, and a vegetarian curry for £27.50. There is also the seasonal set lunch which offers two courses for £17.50 or three courses for £19.50. In addition you can also enjoy lunch on a Sunday at 2 for 1 prices.

All in all, there are many different offers to choose from and you can easily avoid paying a la carte prices.

Although I was not won over with the decor, this is an Indian restaurant that I would recommend to all for its food as this is what really matters at the end of the day. Tamarind definitely does not disappoint in this regard.
