Located in the Covent Garden area, The Jar Kitchen prides itself on delivering locally sourced produce and fresh ingredients to its customers. A bright and airy yet intimate room on the ground floor, jars of all shapes and sizes can be spotted on the walls and tables. This gives the restaurant a kitsch, modern feel whilst also displaying their passion for sustainability.

Would I Want Seconds?

Unfortunately despite the great ambience and friendly wait staff, vegetarians do not have much choice at all in The Jar Kitchen.

As I was not keen on the sole vegetarian starter offered (courgette flowers, goats cheese, honey, walnuts),  I was guided by our helpful waiter to try the cauliflower and blue cheese side as a starter which was tasty and of a good size.

To my dismay, for my main course I had no choice but to order a salad which in my opinion should only ever be a side to a fabulous meal. However, I was please to be proved wrong as the dish of mixed grain salad, roasted heirloom carrots, coconut yoghurt, pomegranate, almonds, herbs was delicious. I was perplexed by what seemed to be a multicoloured vegetable within the dish however this later turned out to be the heirloom carrots which were quite delightful.

Triple cooked chips

Also, I'm not sure that anyone could argue that pomegranate seeds perk up any salad although in this case they were the icing on the cake to a great combination of flavours and textures. As I can't stay healthy for too long, I also ordered some triple cooked chips as a side and these were crisp and just how chips should be.

For dessert, I opted for some mini doughnuts and I am so glad that I did. The warm cinnamon doughnuts were mouthwateringly good and the salted caramel dip was so delicious that I didn't even miss the chocolate dipping sauce that doughnuts are normally served with.

Could I Afford Seconds?

Prices are quite standard with starters starting at £6, mains ranging from £9.50 to £18 and all desserts at £6. Luckily for veggies, prices are always on the lower end of the spectrum so the meal I experienced was definitely of a reasonable price.

Mini doughnuts

Overall?

As I specifically review for the vegetarian palette, The Jar Kitchen is a tricky one. There are a distinct lack of choices compared with the options for carnivores so on first glance The Jar Kitchen might be one to avoid. However if you are accompanying meat-eating friends, trying to stay healthy or simply craving some amazing doughnuts then you cant go wrong with The Jar Kitchen.
