Veggie Bunny

One reason I love London is for the variety of cuisines that can be found on its bustling streets. So when I heard of a new restaurant in Soho that was serving up a cuisine I hadn’t tried before -  South African Street Food - I had to give it a try!

The original bunny chow was created in Durban, South Africa in the 1940's and have been served in London, since 2013. The restaurant itself is a casual space with benches and a few tables, designed for lunches rather than a leisurely meal. However the interiors have been styled with a invitingly quirky vibe perfectly suited for the Soho food scene.

'What is bunnychow?"

Would I Want Seconds?

At Bunnychow orders are made at the counter from a short but comprehensive menu. Diners essentially personalise their own ‘bunny’, a hollowed out bun, by selecting the base, filling, and topping. The options include mutton curry, spicy chicken, veggie, or pulled pork. There’s also the option of adding sides such as chicken wings to the meal too.

I tried the Veggie Bunny with cauliflower, chickpeas, paneer, spicy South African sauce. I really enjoyed the taste of the filling which surprisingly reminded me a vegetable curry, especially due to the addition of paneer. My dining companion tried the Durban Bunny made of slow cooked mutton curry which was also served with fresh and bright salad topping making it look and smell immensely appealing!

Bunnychow also serve freshly squeezed juice and I tried the Green Mamba made of cucumber, Mint, Lime, Elderflower & Juniper Berries. Similar to a virgin mojito in taste, the drinks here can also be served with added spirits for a twist.

Could I Afford Seconds?

Bunnychow was one of the cheapest restaurants I’ve been to in a long time. In fact my whole meal was cheaper than my meagre lunch I had bought from a popular lunchtime chain the same day. Each bunny costs only £5 and is served as a satisfying large portion. The drinks and sides are also moderately priced, making the whole experience cheaper than a day’s travel in London.

Overall?

Bunnychow is the ideal place for a quality and wholesome but quick meal in central London. Despite the low prices the portions and flavours are amazing.

I will certainly keep Bunnychow in mind for whenever I am in need of a delicious filling pitstop.
