Travel: 5 undeniable reasons to visit Dubrovnik's Old Town this year
Travel: 5 reasons to visit Dubrovnik, Croatia
Dubrovnik is a city which is brimming with things to explore, and eat!
The winning combination of sun, sea and delicious local cuisine means Dubrovnik is one of those cities you can never spend enough time in.
I loved my time in Dubrovnik and here are my five essential things to do in the beautiful city.
1. Gasp at the magnificent views along the Old Town Walls
Dubrovnik is surrounded by an impressive two kilometre defensive wall dating back to the thirteenth century and is one of the city’s main attractions.
The walk will usually take a few hours but you can set your own pace, stopping for as many Instagram worthy photo opportunities as you like! The views of the expanse of red riled roofs within the walls on one side and the beautiful blue Adriatic sea on the other means these Old CIty walls are not to be missed.
2. Explore the cursed island of Lokrum
Lokrum is a small island located off the coast of Dubrovnik with a creepy and enticing history to it. This uninhabited island is awash with lush green vegetation, wildlife and historic ruins and is also believed to be cursed. As a result it is forbidden to stay overnight on the island and everyone leaves on the last ferry.
However the lack of human population has let nature run its course, resulting in beautiful pine forests, rocky beaches and tons of deserted green space to relax in. Grab a spot by the sea and spend the day lapping up the sunshine and waves completely undisturbed.
3. Gorge on the local seafood
Seafood is at the centre of any menu in Dubrovnik, as its proximity to the Adriatic sea mean that Dalmatian specialities such as squid, cuttlefish and octopus are widely available - perfect for a seafood fan like me!
The best high-end restaurants for seafood include Nautika. For mid-range freshly prepared local cuisine climb the steepest incline you’ll find within the Old City Walls to sample the delights of Lady Pipi, where the meat you choose is barbecued in front of the diners.
There are also little ‘hole-in-the-wall’ type restaurants nestled amongst the side streets; my favourite of which is Barba and their must try octopus salad!
4. Hitch a ride on a bright orange cable-car
Opened in 2010, the orange cable-cars are a new addition to the city. They scale the 778 metre steep incline over the Old Town to Mount Srđ and provide jaw-dropping panoramic views of the Old Town and the Adriatic sea. The journey takes less than five minutes and although the queue to get into one is considerably longer, it is definitely worth the wait.
5. Marvel at the sunsets with a cocktail in hand
Dubrovnik is blessed with stunning sea views and many gorgeous bars have popped up to make the most of hidden vantage points. The most popular of which are Buža I and Buža II. Comprised of different layers along the rock face, find a spot and settle in to admire the stunning sunsets across the sea. What’s more you can even dive into the Adriatic sea from these bars – perfect for any thrill seeker.
