Patara, Soho - Restaurant Review

Located in the heart of Soho, London’s most vibrant area, Patara is the flagship branch of this global restaurant brand. When we entered the restaurant we were greeted in the traditional Thai friendly manner, and were enveloped with the smell of soothing lemongrass incense, which instantly transported me back to Thailand!

We seated in the beautiful dining area, which was tastefully decorated with a large intricately carved temple as a centrepiece. This calming dining space was the ideal location for our relaxing evening!

Food?

We were instantly impressed with the variety of dishes on the menu, which included some traditional Thai dishes that we remembered tasting from our travels.

For starters we decide to order the Patara Platter. This beautifully presented platter includes delicious chicken satay, spiced fish cakes, Chor muang dumplings, a refreshing mango and prawn salad, and my favourite, duck spring rolls. This platter is the perfect way to sample a variety of delicious starters, and can also be ordered to share amongst 2, 4 or more people.

My choice for main course was the Lamb Shank Massaman. This curry based dish was one of my favourite dishes at Patara. Cooked in coconut milk curry base, this large braised lamb shank is cooked with potatoes, and garnished with almond and beetroot pickled onion to create an unctuous combination of beautiful flavours. I tried and loved a similar dish in Thailand and this tasted just as authentic!

We also tried the Tamarind Duck, and with duck being one of my favourite meats, this dish did not disappoint. The duck confit was glazed with ginger and tamarind sauce and served on a delicious bed of grilled pineapple. The flavours in all the ingredients complimented each other very well to create a special dish.

We also tried the traditional Thai Green Curry with chicken. This velvety and fragrant curry was cooked with green pea aubergine, bamboo shoots and an incredible homemade curry paste made of fresh green chilli and basil.

For desserts I couldn’t resist ordering the Khaoneow Mamuang because of all the amazing mango sticky rice dishes I had in Thailand. This dessert was just as good as those I remember tasting, and I even managed to finish it even though we were so full from our mains!

As a big fan of salted caramel, we also tried Millionaire’s Slice, which was a salted caramel topping on a lovely sweet biscuit base. This was served with a classic Madagascan vanilla ice cream to create a decadent and indulgent dessert!

Drinks?

The cocktails at Patara as a must try, as they are created with a delightful combination of flavours and presented very well. I really enjoyed the Patara Royal, a champagne based cocktail, as well as the Thai Long Island Iced Tea. Patara also served Champagne, Processo and wine from an extensive list.

Overall?

One thing which I loved about all the dishes we tried was that they were all rich in flavour. It was evident that the recipes had been worked on and perfected over time to represent authentic Thai flavours.

As a result of this dedication to serving excellent food, Patara has won a host of awards, including ‘Thai Select Premium’, who handpicked Patara for representing not just the authentic flavours of Thailand, but also the ambiance, service and decor of Thailand too.

This was one of my favourite Thai meals in London for a long time, and I would certainly recommend it for anyone looking for an authentic Thai experience.
