A Tour of Dishoom: London’s Best Bombay Cafés
Dishoom is more than just a restaurant—it’s a love letter to the Irani cafés of Bombay, a place where rich flavors, warm hospitality, and nostalgic charm come together seamlessly. Each London location has its own personality, shaped by its surroundings and subtle design differences. Having dined at every Dishoom across the city, here’s my take on what makes each one special.
Dishoom King’s Cross - 5/5
Set inside a restored Victorian warehouse, Dishoom King’s Cross has a unique grandeur that sets it apart. The high ceilings, exposed brickwork, and railway-station-inspired decor create a dramatic yet inviting setting. There’s something cinematic about dining here, with warm lighting and vintage railway posters adding to the experience.
Exclusive Dishes:
Beyond the ambiance, this location boasts one of the most exciting menus, with exclusive dishes like the Nalli Nihari Biryani—a rich, slow-cooked lamb shank layered with fragrant rice and served with nihari gravy. Whether you're stopping by for a quick breakfast or a long, leisurely dinner, King’s Cross delivers.
Best for:
Big groups and special occasions—plenty of space, a buzzing atmosphere, and an impressive menu.
Dishoom Shoreditch - 5/5
Shoreditch’s Dishoom exudes an effortlessly cool vibe, reflecting the neighbourhoods artistic and edgy energy. Inside, the design leans slightly more modern while still keeping that old-world charm—think tiled floors, leafy plants, and a hint of retro glamour.
The food here feels just as fresh as the surroundings, with a standout selection of small plates like the Chilli Cheese Toast and the ever-popular Okra Fries. It’s also one of the best locations for cocktails—the Bandra Blush, with gin, raspberries, and rose, is a must-try.
Al fresco dining in the Verandah:
The main attraction at Dishoom Shoreditch is Verandah. This indoor/outdoor, year-round space has an eclectic design to it and is filled with comfortable furnishings. The additions of lamps and bookcases add an adorable homely feel to the restaurant. It also has a retractable roof which protects from London monsoons but can also provide the perfect idyllic setting for al fresco breakfast or for sipping cocktails on a balmy summer evening.
I absolutely love the outdoor verandah, which is a rare gem in the City of London, making it one of the best spots for al fresco dining in the summer. I’ve spent many an afternoon catching up with friends over a bun maska and copious chai, watching the light change as the sunsets over the Verandah.
Best for:
Weekend brunches and cocktails—ideal for a relaxed yet lively meal with friends.
Dishoom Covent Garden - 4.5/5
The original Dishoom, Covent Garden, remains a favorite among longtime fans. Tucked away on a quiet street, this restaurant set the blueprint for the rest, with its artfully distressed interiors, vintage mirrors, and sepia-toned photographs that transport you straight to old Bombay. The atmosphere here is lively yet intimate, making it a perfect spot for an early morning bacon naan roll or a late-night feast of black daal and lamb chops.
Food-wise, you’ll find all the classics executed with precision—the house chai is always on point, and the gunpowder potatoes here seem to have a touch more spice than at other locations. Given its central location, Covent Garden is ideal for pre-theatre dining or a midweek lunch in the heart of London’s bustle.
Try and book in advance for this one, as the queues here seem to be longer than the others, probably due to its central location.
Best for:
A central, cozy spot perfect for pre-theatre dining or casual meals.
Dishoom Carnaby - 4/5
Right in the heart of Soho, Dishoom Carnaby has an unmistakable energy. The restaurant takes inspiration from Bombay’s jazz era, with a playful, retro aesthetic that feels different from the other locations. The decor features deep blues, gold accents, and nods to Bombay’s music scene, making it a vibrant yet intimate dining space.
The menu stays true to Dishoom’s roots, with all the familiar favorites alongside some great vegan and vegetarian options. The Jackfruit Biryani here is particularly good, with layers of spice and slow-cooked depth that make it just as satisfying as the traditional lamb version. Carnaby’s location makes it a perfect prelude to a night out or a fun dinner with friends.
Best for:
Trendy, vibrant meals—great for a lively dinner before heading out in Soho.
Dishoom Kensington - 4/5
Tucked into the elegant streets of Kensington, this Dishoom feels slightly more refined, with dark wood interiors, plush seating, and a slightly quieter, more relaxed atmosphere. The design here draws inspiration from Bombay’s high society clubs, giving it an air of old-world sophistication while still maintaining the warm, welcoming spirit of Dishoom.
Exclusive Dishes:
The Malai Lobster is a true showstopper, exclusive to this location, and worth every indulgent bite. The service here is also some of the best across all locations, making it a great choice for a date night or a more intimate gathering.
Best for:
A refined yet relaxed dining experience—ideal for date nights or special occasions.
Dishoom Canary Wharf - 4/5
The newest addition to the Dishoom family, Canary Wharf’s location feels sleek and modern while still honoring the brand’s signature vintage aesthetic. With its waterfront views and expansive space, it’s a fantastic spot for both business lunches and relaxed weekend dining. The space is bright, airy, and less bustling than some of the other locations, making it a great choice if you’re looking for a slightly quieter experience.
The Chaat and Pani Puri selection here is particularly strong, and it’s also a great place to enjoy Dishoom’s signature House Black Daal with a view. Whether you’re here for a work lunch or a laid-back dinner, Canary Wharf delivers a reliable and enjoyable experience.
Best for:
Business lunches and scenic dining—great for a more spacious, relaxed meal.
Dishoom Battersea - 4/5
The Battersea location brings Dishoom’s signature charm to the south of the river, offering a stunning riverside setting with a slightly more relaxed feel. The design draws from Bombay’s colonial-era social clubs, blending elegant wood paneling, rattan seating, and warm lighting to create an inviting atmosphere. It’s a great spot to watch the world go by, whether you’re seated indoors or on the terrace overlooking the Thames.
The menu stays true to Dishoom’s signature offerings, but one standout here is the Aloo Sabzi Cutlets, a crispy and comforting dish that pairs beautifully with a steaming cup of chai. The King Prawns Moilee, cooked in a fragrant coconut and turmeric sauce, is another highlight that feels right at home in this scenic setting. Battersea’s relaxed vibe makes it a fantastic choice for a long, leisurely meal.
Best for:
Riverside dining—perfect for a relaxed meal with a beautiful view.
Bonus: Dishoom Edinburgh - 5/5
Dishoom Edinburgh is one of my favourite restaurants outside of London, so I had to include it here as a bonus!
Venturing beyond London, Dishoom Edinburgh is a stunning outpost that blends Scottish charm with Bombay nostalgia. Housed in a historic building, its interiors feature grand stone columns, warm lighting, and elegant booths, creating a slightly more regal feel. There’s something special about stepping inside on a chilly day and being greeted by the comforting aroma of fresh chai and grilled meats.
The menu offers all the beloved classics, but the Porridge with Date and Banana at breakfast is a must-try, giving a nod to Scotland’s own culinary traditions. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, this location offers a unique take on the Dishoom experience while maintaining the same warmth and hospitality found across the brand.
We enjoyed the thali breakfast with unlimited chai before hiking up to Arthur’s seat. This was the perfect warming breakfast to fuel us through the hike and make for a fabulous day! I highly recommend this combination!
Best for:
A cozy retreat—perfect for warming up with chai and hearty food in a stunning setting.
Overall:
Each Dishoom in London has its own distinct personality, but all of them offer the same unbeatable combination of incredible food, nostalgic charm, and welcoming hospitality. Whether you're looking for a quick breakfast, a long dinner, or a place to gather with friends, there’s a Dishoom for every occasion.
