Permit Room Cambridge has quickly climbed to the top of my list of favourite spots in the city. A perfect blend of Indian-inspired cuisine and vibrant cocktails, it creates a warm and inviting ambiance for any occasion. Whether you're in the mood for a late-night drink or a hearty dinner, this place never disappoints.
The Decor
Permit Room exudes an old-world charm mixed with contemporary aesthetics. The interiors are inspired by the colonial-era bars of India, with vintage furniture, soft amber lighting, and nostalgic art. Its layout encourages intimate conversations, whether you’re seated at the polished bar or one of the cozy booths. The attention to detail—from the intricate patterns of the tiles to the stylish crockery—adds to its allure.
The Food
The food at Permit Room is a celebration of bold flavours and traditional Indian techniques. The menu features a variety of small plates and larger dishes to satisfy any craving. Standouts include the Keema Pau, a spiced lamb mince served with buttery buns, and the Gunpowder Potatoes, which pack a delightful spice punch. For mains, the Chicken Ruby, a velvety curry, and the vegetarian-friendly Jackfruit Biryani are absolute must-tries.
Don’t miss their Kala Khatta Sharbat, a tangy-sweet palate cleanser served as a refreshing drink. And for dessert lovers, the Caramel Custard is an indulgence worth every spoonful.
The Drink
Permit Room’s cocktail menu is just as exciting as its food. Their signature cocktails pay homage to India’s diverse flavours. The Permit Room Old-Fashioned, made with a blend of spices, is a unique twist on a classic. The Chai Martini combines spiced tea flavors with a smooth vodka base, delivering a delightful kick.
My particular favourite was the The Permit Room Clover Club - a refined and playful take on a classic cocktail, blending the smoothness of Bombay Sapphire gin with the tartness of raspberry syrup and fresh lemon juice. Finished with a frothy egg white layer, this drink is both visually appealing and deliciously balanced.
For a non-alcoholic option, the Nimbu Pani Spritz offers a fizzy, citrusy refreshment. Their knowledgeable bartenders are always ready to recommend the perfect drink pairing for your meal.
Overall
Permit Room Cambridge is more than just a restaurant; it's an experience. The friendly and attentive service, coupled with its excellent food and drinks, makes it a standout destination. Open late, it’s also ideal for those seeking vibrant nightlife in the heart of Cambridge.
Permit Room has undoubtedly become my go-to spot in the city. Whether you're a foodie, a cocktail enthusiast, or someone who simply enjoys a lively yet relaxed ambiance, this venue is a gem worth visiting.
