Poppa Plonk’s Wonky Workshop - Escape Room Review

I’ve always wanted to try an escape rooms adventure and when I heard of the sinister Poppa Plonk and he’s creepy workshop, I couldn’t wait to give it a try for Halloween!

Poppa Plonk’s Wonky Workshop has recently been voted in the top 100 escape rooms in the world! Run by Handmade Mysteries, it is one of a collection they offer.

We headed to Islington to The Depot, a cosy bar and restaurant with a small theatre and inviting bar located upstairs. Armed with a few drinks, we were then collected and led up a dark stairwell to an eerie workshop and left with some ominous instructions a coin to start us off.

During this 60 minute challenge, our host was Oki, an outrageous ventriloquist dummy, who guided our team through the task of completing Plock’s penultimate creation. To do this we had to take on crazy clues, contraptions and characters within the escape room.

It took all the brain power of our group of 5 to work out the clues and unlock the puzzles to move through the rooms. We realised very quickly that this is an escape room where we had to not only think as a group, but also listen and take note of the small little clues around us.

Being plunged into a bizarre realm of comedic clues and immersive theatre was fun and unnerving at the same time, and we had to have our wits about us!

At the end of the 60 minutes we were so engrossed in the game that many of the team didn’t want to stop and continued to decipher the clues! Although we were unable to complete the challenge within the 60 minute slots, we all had a fantastic time full of bizarre moments, moments of genius and moments of sheer laughter too!

We then headed to the bar and spent a further hour deconstructing, talking through the game and plotting to try it again and be better!

Poppa Plonk’s Wonky Workshop is perfect for Halloween and even for Christmas get togethers too. It’s a great icebreaker and bonding session and gets everyone working as a team!

Games are for adults aged 18 and over. Poppa Plonk’s Wonky Workshop is currently played at The Depot pub in Islington, for teams of up to six players. Larger groups can split up and compete for the fastest time.
