Perfect for: Romantic weekends away, a weekend at the races

Location and First Impressions:

I recently had the privilege of staying at The Bradley Hotel in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, famous of course for horse racing and the Cheltenham Gold Cup. 

Located in the fashionable Montpellier district of Cheltenham, an area filled with gorgeous boutiques shops, trendy bars and restaurants, The Bradley is in a perfect location to spend a leisurely and relaxing weekend away.

There is plenty of on street parking which the hotel can arrange for £5 for 24 hours and the train station is a 10 minute walk away. 

Built in 1845, the hotel is a beautiful regency house which carries forth the classical style and character of the Regency era to create an effortless look and feel of regal elegance.

The lovely and super friendly manager Kerrie made us a much welcome gin and tonic whilst she showed us around the hotel and we were impressed by her detailed knowledge of the hotel having only been in post for a couple of weeks. 

Walking around, we couldn’t help but marvel at the walls which were lined with period antiques and historic artworks that added to the hotel’s charm. I especially loved the lounge which was very inviting and filled with comfy sofas and beautiful ornaments that would certainly fetch a fair amount on Bargain Hunt!

There are also complimentary fresh cakes and an honesty bar where you help yourself to a drink and leave the money in a little box. Lovely little touches. 

Our Room:

The Bradley has 10 ensuite rooms in total, each recently refurbished with new carpets and decorations, and modern bathrooms with heated floor, rainforest shower, ultra-soft bathrobes and luxurious Penhaligon toiletries. We stayed in the Luxury 4 Poster Bed Room on the first floor which, as the name suggests, had a glorious antique mahogany 4 poster bed.

The room was very large with high ceilings, gorgeous period furniture and even a fireplace. I especially loved the vibrant turquoise wallpaper with floral and bird patterns that really added to the rich splendour of the room. 

There is a good quality Nespresso machine with a selection of coffee capsules as well as a kettle with a selection of tea bags. There is also complimentary bottled water, a small fridge with fresh milk, ironing board, safe, bathrobes and slippers. Essentially everything you need to have a pleasant stay including a TV with a Netflix option. A decanter of complimentary sloe gin is a nice touch that we definitely made use of!

The luxurious rainforest walk-in shower was a dream and there is a large feature bath should the mood take you. 

The bed itself is an ultra comfy wool and silk king-size mattress which made me fall asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow and resulted in a perfect night’s sleep.

The Food & Drink:

After a wonderful night’s sleep my husband and I had worked up an appetite and quickly headed to breakfast on the lower ground floor. There was plenty of seating for hotel guests and an added conservatory that overlooks the garden. 

A large mahogany sideboard houses a selection of cereals, fruit juices, dried fruits and nuts, yoghurts, and fresh fruit including pineapple and melon.

Tea and coffee are served to order along with an extensive hot breakfast menu including Eggs Benedict, The Full Bradley (a full English breakfast with vegetarian and lighter options), The Bradley Stack (half a toasted muffin or toast topped with bacon and a poached egg), and The Bradley Classic (scrambled eggs with smoked salmon served on half a toasted muffin or toast with a lemon and parsley garnish.)

After much deliberation, I chose The Vegetarian Full Bradley (vegetarian sausage, free range egg (fried, poached or scrambled), mushrooms, tomatoes and baked beans) and my husband chose The Full Bradley (a locally sourced sausage, two rashers of hand cured bacon, a free range egg (fried, poached or scrambled), mushrooms, tomatoes, black pudding and baked beans. 

Both were delicious and cooked perfectly and I really enjoyed the vegetarian sausage which tasted very meaty and was a good meat alternative. My husband, on the other hand, devoured the pork sausage and bacon which was locally sourced and of very high quality. A winning breakfast that really set us up for the day.

Dinner is not served at The Bradley but there are plenty of restaurants within a five-minute walk including The Ivy which I dined at and will be posting my review up shortly. 

Overall:

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at The Bradley and highly recommend it as a hotel for a romantic weekend getaway or as a place to stay during the Cheltenham races. It is a hotel with a regal elegance and charm yet offers all the modern comforts to make your stay a pleasant and relaxing one. The service and hospitality is of the highest order and the the location in the heart of the Montpellier district is perfect. All in all, The Bradley is a five star boutique townhouse that doesn’t fail to impress and is more than worthy of a repeat visit.
